The Blocks at Gimbels

This project focused on the Philadelphia’s Market Street. In its prime, the street was full of department stores and economic growth. However, as urban sprawl exited the city and into the suburbs, soon the shopping centers moved as well.

I collaborated with Grazelle Giray and Rachel Kinsey during the Fall 2024 Semester. Our project wanted to restore the legacy of the Gimbels Building, while adjusting its block to accommodate mixed use development. Affordable housing and brick-and-mortar buildings were ideas to consider.

First Phase: Renovating the Gimbels Building
Second Phase: Extension of the Gimbels Building. This extension would allow mixed use development to come to play.
Third Phase: Implementation of the Hotel. This phasing brings more tourism to the upcoming 76ers stadium and Philadelphia’s downtown districts.
Fourth Phase: More mixed use construction.
Fifth Phase: Thomas Jefferson University expansion.
